The U.S. Army, leveraging the unique capabilities of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), is taking a significant step forward in cold-weather operations with the rollout and testing of a new capability designed to optimize routes for vehicles traveling in challenging winter terrain. Currently being tested and refined, the WRP algorithm is continuously being enhanced and integrated with the widely used Tactical Assault Kit (TAK) software.

Military units operating in GPS-denied environments will be able to establish their location with an app that gets its bearings from man-made or natural terrain features in the vicinity, like a skyline. The project is led by Skyline Nav AI, which has secured a contract from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to provide GPS-independent localization capability for the ATAK platform. Work on the $750,000, 15-month contract began in March 2022.

It is compatible with Android, Apple iOS and Windows.

BYOD provides the National Guard with the capability to access collaboration tools outside of drill weekends. Soldiers and airmen can access Microsoft Teams and other virtual capabilities from their own personal devices, meaning they spend less time on drill weekends getting caught up. McNeil said one of the biggest improvements is that they can sign documents virtually now.
